Working of PSA Plants
PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) Oxygen Plants utilize a process that selectively adsorbs nitrogen and other impurities from ambient air, allowing oxygen to pass through. The process involves two towers filled with a specialized adsorbent material, typically zeolite. Air is compressed and fed into one tower while the other tower undergoes regeneration. Nitrogen and other impurities are adsorbed by the adsorbent material, leaving behind purified oxygen, which is collected and stored for use. Once the adsorbent material in one tower becomes saturated, the process switches to the other tower for continuous oxygen production. This cyclic operation ensures a constant supply of high-purity oxygen.
PSA Nitrogen Plants operate on a similar principle to PSA Oxygen Plants but are designed to produce nitrogen gas. Ambient air is compressed and fed into a vessel containing a specialized adsorbent material, such as carbon molecular sieve. Oxygen and other trace gases are adsorbed by the adsorbent material, allowing pure nitrogen gas to pass through. The adsorption process is cyclic, with one vessel adsorbing nitrogen while the other undergoes regeneration. This alternating cycle ensures a continuous supply of high-purity nitrogen gas for various industrial applications.
